President Warren G. Harding marries a divorcee named Florence Mabel Kling in Marion, Ohio. Florence grew up in a well-to-do home and displayed a fiery personality atypical for a woman of her time. She eloped at the age of 19, but her husband was a hard drinker who deserted her and their small son. After he bolted, Florence rented out rooms in her home to make money. Harding came to town with an interest in the newspaper business and eventually bought the Marion Star. He and Florence were soon wed, and she dedicated herself to advancing her political career-campaigning tirelessly during his successful bids for the Senate and presidency, once saying, "I have only one real hobby--my husband." Harding could not say the same of her. He had two affairs during their marriage. Florence managed to forgive him, although the trust was broken. In spite of their personal problems, she attempted to make good use of her time in the White House by promoting issues like women's rights and veterans' benefits. She would also travel with President Harding whenever she was able, and was with him in 1923 when he died of a sudden heart attack during a trip to California. His death came shortly before the public learned about his administration's role in some major corruption scandals. Florence accepted his death and refused an autopsy, causing people to start unfounded rumors that perhaps she had poisoned him. She ignored the whispers and took her husband's body home to Marion, where the two had met. She died less than a year later--some said from illness, others said from sorrow.
