Va. Tech baseball begins emotional first trip

BOSTON - The Virginia Tech baseball team observed a moment of silence Saturday before its first road game since a gunman killed 32 students on campus, standing for the tribute in front of banners of support hung by Boston College students.
The public address announcer at Boston College’s Shea Field asked for a moment of silence prior to the national anthem “to honor the victims, their families and the entire Virginia Tech community.”
The banners, hung on a parking garage behind the Virginia Tech dugout, spelled “V TECH” and showed a ribbon in Virginia Tech maroon.
Virginia Tech was scheduled to play Boston College on Friday, but the game was rained out and rescheduled as a doubleheader on Saturday.
The teams split the doubleheader, with Boston College taking the opener 6-3, and Virginia Tech winning the second 6-1.
On Friday, Virginia Tech’s first-year coach Peter Hughes, who left Boston College to take the Virginia Tech job, said his team was “carrying a lot of baggage” after the April 16 massacre.
“It’s important for us to get them out there to play college baseball again, especially our seniors,” he said.
