BALTIMORE - The Fuel Fund of Maryland held a class Wednesday to help people who get assistance in paying energy bills learn ways to keep those bills down.
The fund has helped nearly 20,000 citizens pay their bills. Wednesday's class was part of a program to teach individuals how to conserve.
Teacher Mary D'Ambrogi said that people can keep their energy use down by using laundry and other appliances between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. in the summer. She said it comes out to a lower cost than if you run them from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
"There are many ways to conserve. Your furnace in the winter -- keep it at a reasonable number and put a sweater on. Your air conditioning in the summer -- keep it at 75 and take your sweater off," D'Ambrogi said.
"I saved almost $50 just from unplugging lamps and microwaves, turning off lights and using energy efficient light bulbs," said one woman who had used some of the tips she learned through the program.
The conservation program, known as Watt Watchers, started two years ago.
