WILLIE GEIST, co-host:
Popeater.com
columnist
Rob Shuter
is here to bring us up to date on all things celebrity.
Mr. ROB SHUTER (Columnist, Popeater.com):
Good morning.
KOTB:
Hey,
Rob
, how you doing, hon?
Mr. SHUTER:
GEIST:
Rob Shuter.
KOTB:
Yes, it's
Rob
.
Mr. SHUTER:
Kathie Lee
, you're looking a little different.
GEIST:
Hey.
KOTB:
She's changed.
Mr. SHUTER:
The hair, something.
KOTB:
All right. So
Mel Gibson
, we talked about him today. Before you analyze what happened, we do have one more clip, again, of an audiotape that it's not confirmed to be
Mel Gibson
...
Mr. SHUTER:
Right, right.
KOTB:
...but they're trying to figure it out if it is. Let's take another listen.
Mr. MEL GIBSON:
You're try to go breast-feed with......foreign bodies in you. Is that it?
Ms. OKSANA GRIGORIEVA:
That has nothing to do with it.
Mr. GIBSON:
Oh, it has nothing to do with what, the fact that you had foreign bodies in there?
Ms. GRIGORIEVA:
Correct.
Mr. GIBSON:
Correct, OK good. So you're not lying to me about fake...?
Ms. GRIGORIEVA:
I never have.
KOTB:
OK. All this -- this is amazing, I've got to say, listening to it.
Mr. SHUTER:
I've never, ever heard anything like this in as long as I've been doing my job. I've never heard anything like this. Allegedly it's him, it's not proven that it's him, but it does sound like that take from "
Braveheart
." I mean, this clearly does sound like
Mel Gibson
. But I've been trying all weekend to find people to defend him. A couple of years ago,
Willie
mentioned it earlier...
KOTB:
Mm-hmm.
Mr. SHUTER:
...he had some similar incidents where he used some very harsh words.
KOTB:
Sure.
Mr. SHUTER:
And people did defend him.
Jodi Foster
came forward, several directors came forward and said he has a terrible drinking problem, he doesn't mean this. But this time nobody's defending
Mel
.
KOTB:
Well, it does -- OK, we talked about his agents have left him.
Mr. SHUTER:
Already, yes.
KOTB:
And friends. I mean, does it seem like his career, would you call this a defining factor?
Mr. SHUTER:
Not only is his career over, and this is a really important point, I think, for
Mel
, his legacy might be over.
GEIST:
Hm.
Mr. SHUTER:
In 10 years time, we're not going to remember this guy who made some great films. I mean, he won the
Oscar
. He's a great actor, a great director. All that's gone. In 10 years, we're going to remember this.
GEIST:
Do you find this in
Hollywood
? We see a public face on the one hand, he seems like such a charming guy.
KOTB:
Mm-hmm.
GEIST:
You see him in interviews at junkets and things like that, but below the surface you see a different guy.
KOTB:
Sweet, yeah.
Mr. SHUTER:
It's a great question. I mean, for years have people have known
Mel
has troubles. People have talked about his drinking problems. He's -- he was loved in
Hollywood
, though. He was a bit of a prankster. And his talent is so great that people forgave a little bit of the personal side.
KOTB:
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Mr. SHUTER:
Now he's stepped the line and I think it's done.
KOTB:
Sure. All right. We had a weekend for weddings.
Mr. SHUTER:
I know.
KOTB:
There were three big weddings, right?
Mr. SHUTER:
Massive, massive. The biggest was probably
Carrie Underwood
and her football player.
KOTB:
Uh-huh
.
Mr. SHUTER:
They got married down in
Georgia
.
KOTB:
Who was there? Who went?
Mr. SHUTER:
It was a fantastic wedding. The three original judges from "Idol" was there.
KOTB:
Oh.
GEIST:
Really?
Mr. SHUTER:
So
Paula Abdul
,
Randy
,
Simon
were all there.
KOTB:
Was that her
wedding dress
?
Mr. SHUTER:
No. I've got a story about that.
KOTB:
OK.
Mr. SHUTER:
You will not see her
wedding dress
because on the way in, everybody had to check in their cell phone, including
Paula Abdul
, because they've sold the wedding pictures and they will be in a weekly magazine, I'm guessing People, on Wednesday.
KOTB:
On Wednesday, OK.
GEIST:
And what about one of my favorite guys on "
The Office
," John Krasinski.
KOTB:
Oh, yeah.
Mr. SHUTER:
Imagine that. And
Emily Blunt
, who we all know from "
The Devil Wears Prada
" and other movies.
KOTB:
I love that. Yeah.
Mr. SHUTER:
A beautiful couple. He's friends with
George Clooney
, he made a movie with him, "Leatherheads," so he's been staying in
George
's villa in
Italy
.
GEIST:
Oh.
Mr. SHUTER:
George
went to the wedding.
KOTB:
All right.
Mr. SHUTER:
So they got married this weekend, too.
KOTB:
And who's the third wedding?
Mr. SHUTER:
The third one is a
VJ
from
MTV
.
KOTB:
Mm-hmm.
Mr. SHUTER:
LaLa and some football player that I've never really...
KOTB:
Yeah.
GEIST:
Basketball,
Carmelo Anthony
,
Denver Nuggets
.
KOTB:
Basketball.
Mr. SHUTER:
Yeah. I like it when celebrities marry celebrities.
GEIST:
That's why I'm here.
Mr. SHUTER:
I don't have to learn all these new names. But now all these sports stars saying that was the big wedding in
New York
downtown.
Kim Kardashian
was there. But the
big guy
that was there was
LeBron
.
KOTB:
I know. Did he get snubbed?
Mr. SHUTER:
Booed on the way in.
KOTB:
Booed?
GEIST:
Yes.
Mr. SHUTER:
Booed.
KOTB:
That's cruel.
Mr. SHUTER:
There was a crowd outside booing him.
KOTB:
All right.
GEIST:
Reporters were shouting questions and he wouldn't have an answer.
Mr. SHUTER:
I know. If you get booed at a wedding, you're in a lot of trouble.
