Top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium will play No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo of France for the Olympics women’s singles gold medal in tennis.

Unlike the men’s tournament, which was filled with upsets, the top two women in the world advanced to Saturday’s final, though not without some trouble.

Henin-Hardenne had to overcome a 5-1 deficit in the third set of her semifinal Friday night before getting past No. 3 Anastasia Myskina of Russia 7-5, 5-7, 8-6 in a matchup of the past two French Open champions.

“In the third set, I was tired, for sure. I had given everything I had, physically and mentally,” said Henin-Hardenne, who hadn’t lost a set until Friday in her first tournament since May. “I don’t know how I did it, but I won.”

Mauresmo, who got past unseeded Alicia Molik of Australia 7-6 (8), 6-3 Friday night, has won three of her five career matches against Henin-Hardenne.

In the women’s doubles semifinals, Li Ting and Sun Tian Tian of China beat Paola Suarez and Patricia Tarabini of Argentina 6-2, 2-6, 9-7, guaranteeing China its first Olympic tennis medal.

Li and Sun face No. 2 Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain for the gold Sunday. The Spaniards were 6-3, 6-0 winners over No. 5 Shinobu Asagoe and Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
