The Oakland Raiders officially are the worst road team in the NFL. They had a golden opportunity to be 3-1 before their matchup against Indianapolis next week, but self-destructed while losing to Houston 30-17.
Kerry Collins was awful while throwing three interceptions and looked like a rookie. The Raiders have lost 11 in a row on the road and that should be good enough to keep them out of the playoffs. Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson had six receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown while having his way against defensive backs Phillip Buchannon and Charles Woodson.
Raiders coach Norv Turner has his work cut out for him after watching his team commit 13 penalties and while turning the ball over five times.
Cincinnati looks like they have absolutely no shot at the playoffs after losing to Pittsburgh 28-17. Carson Palmer struggled again at quarterback while Jon Kitna sat on the sidelines with a clipboard. Marvin Lewis should have pulled Palmer in the third quarter for Kitna in hopes of motivating his team and saving the season. He is stubborn and now has no choice but to let Palmer play and continue to struggle for the rest of the season.
Pittsburgh outscored Cincinnati 14-0 in the final quarter and completely took control of the trenches with the game on the line. Steelers coach Bill Cowher is lucky to have Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback, and the rookie has two wins under his belt. He will need it as he prepares for a tough division game against Cleveland next week.
The final box score does not tell the story, but every Denver Bronco fan should be thrilled their team held on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16-13. Denver is not used to playing in such hot weather and intense humidity. It showed as several players became dehydrated in the second half.
The Broncos did not turn the ball over and played smart in the fourth quarter on the road. This was the type of game that eventual playoff teams win, and coach Mike Shanahan has every reason to be proud of his surely weary players.
The San Diego Chargers played their best game in years dominating the Tennessee Titans 38-17 in front of several empty seats at Qualcomm Stadium. This is exactly what San Diego coach Marty Shottenheimer needed to pump some energy into this struggling franchise.
LaDainian Tomlinson had another huge game, rushing for 147 yards on 17 carries and 1 touchdown behind an offensive line that dominated the front seven of the Titans. The Titans look to be in serious trouble as quarterback Steve McNair sat out with a bruised sternum and Tennessee could only rush for 72 yards.
This could be the beginning of the end for a Titans franchise that has been in the upper echelon of the NFL for the past seven seasons. They have upcoming road games at Green Bay (Oct. 11) and at Minnesota (Oct. 24), and I can't see them catching Indianapolis to win the AFC South or getting by Jacksonville for a wild card.
It would have been nice to see Emmitt Smith walk off the field and announce his retirement after the Arizona Cardinals beat the Saints 34-10. He rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score. The all-time leading rusher in NFL history actually looked like he had something left in the tank. It's too bad nobody but a few fans and his family actually bothered to come out in the hot desert sun to watch his greatest game as a Cardinal.
