September 4, 1949
A Peekskill, NY concert ends in violence as enraged locals attack attendees in a clash of culture, politics and race. The concert was a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, a leftist organization supported by African-American and communist-leaning singer Paul Robeson. Robeson and activist Pete Seeger headlined the concert, which had been played for three years in Peekskill—a popular getaway for New York City liberals—without incident. By 1949, Cold War battle lines had been clearly drawn and in the right/left divides of the 1930s reemerged raw with the U.S.S.R. a clear enemy. Robeson, outspoken on Civil Rights and issues for years, attended the Paris World Peace Conference in April, where the Associated Press reported him saying, "it is unthinkable that American Negroes will go to war in behalf of those who have oppressed us for generations…against a country which in one generation has raised our people to the full dignity of mankind." Robeson was allegedly misquoted, but the damage was done. The State Department revoked his passport, and in the weeks leading up to the concert (initially scheduled for August 27, it was changed due to the threat of violence) the Peekskill Evening Star urged people to protest the concert. There was no violence at the show, mainly due to union security and its venue on private property. But as the audience drove away in buses and cars, they were assaulted by residents lining the exit roads. Over 140 people were injured.
